Hours for the pass. Days for the bleed. What you see in that window can be blood, clots, tissue, or the pregnancy. You are not expected to sort those by yourself.

You may pass blood. You may pass clots — dark, jelly-like clumps. You may pass gray or white tissue. You may pass the pregnancy itself. The label says bleeding is often heavier than a heavy period. Cramping is expected. Those figures about days of bleeding are after both medicines, not after the first pill alone.

You may not be able to tell a clot from tissue from the pregnancy. Do not try to diagnose it in a bathroom. If you cannot tell what you are looking at, go to an ER, or talk with a nurse.

For this Act, “unborn child” means a human being, including an unborn child in utero at any stage of development, regardless of viability.

Cardiac activity typically begins in the sixth week of pregnancy as dated from the last period, about three weeks after fertilization. Sources give a range, not one day. At that stage the heart is a beating tube, not a four-chambered heart. It is still a functioning human heart.

Soak through two thick full-size sanitary pads per hour for two consecutive hours: that is an ER. If you are crashing before the second hour, do not wait. Fainting or severe pain belongs there too. Tell the ER you took the abortion pill — mifepristone, misoprostol, or both, if you know.

Serious and sometimes fatal infections and bleeding occur very rarely. No causal relationship between mifepristone and misoprostol and those events has been established. Prolonged heavy bleeding may be a sign of incomplete abortion. Serious infection can present without fever.

Bleeding and tissue can look like a miscarriage. They can also be a ruptured ectopic. If you are unsure, it is an ER.

The approved regimen is not treatment for ectopic pregnancy. A ruptured ectopic can be fatal. One-sided pain or pain at the tip of your shoulder is an ectopic concern. Treat it as an ER.

FDA labeling says follow-up about 7 to 14 days after mifepristone is very important. If listed contacts cannot be reached, go to an ER.

Fainting is an ER. Ordinary dizziness is expected. If you cannot stay upright when you stand, treat that like fainting and call 911.
